The Largest Solar Park in Greece

In Kozani, a region long associated with electricity production from lignite, the largest solar park in Greece — and one of the largest in Europe — has been developed. The project, inaugurated in April 2022, marks a new era for the country’s energy landscape.

A Large-Scale Project

The investment was implemented by the Hellenic Petroleum Group (HELPE) with a total cost of approximately €130 million, covering an area of 4,500 acres in the communities of Mavrodendri, Kalamiá, and Koila. During the construction phase, it employed more than 350 workers, while today it continues to provide permanent jobs related to security, maintenance, and cleaning of the facilities.

The park consists of 18 individual solar stations with a total capacity of 204 MW. Its annual production is estimated to exceed 300,000 MWh, enough to cover the needs of around 75,000 households. This output surpasses the entire energy consumption of Western Macedonia.

Environmental Benefits

The project plays a decisive role in reducing the carbon footprint. It is estimated to prevent the emission of approximately 300,000 tons of CO₂ each year, actively supporting both national and European targets for a green transition.

The Kozani solar park stands as a landmark project for Greece, highlighting the country’s shift towards clean energy sources, while also creating new jobs and reinforcing sustainable development.
